Sources

I used a couple sources to make this project. Here they are...

Athena's Role

Athena's Role

The reason that Athena exists was to help people become more efficient with their lives. She taught them weaving, sewing, agriculture, and mettalurgy. She also gave excellent advice to the people and, if danger struck, she would defend the people. She protected people during wars and gave people safe returns.

This one was pretty short, but I'm trying to make it all sorted. So, until next time!

Athena's Inventions

Athena created many items to help man. Here are some of the items I was able to find.

The bridle. This allowed people to use and tame horses.

The trumpet. You all know what the trumpet is, but you probably didn't know she made it!

The flute. Apparently, Athena really liked music.

The pot, so that people could hold stuff.

The rake. Now, you had better thank Athena every time you rake someone's lawn.

The plow. So basically, Athena also enjoyed lawn service.

The yoke. I don't know what it is, but she made it!

The ship, so people could sail the seven seas!

Lastly, the chariot. This went with the bridle she invented.

As you can probably tell, Athena was a great help to the Ancient Greeks, and she played a huge part in mythology.

Athena Fun Facts

Just some extra facts about Athena.

In the Roman myths, Athena was known as Minerva. That's right, not the name of a planet here!

Not just the goddess of wisdom, but also of crafts, domestic arts, and war. You thought Ares was the god of war? Well, I did too, and I was wrong. Either that, or they are both gods of war.

Athena's symbol was the owl. No wonder people think owls are so smart!

Originally, she was the great goddess in the form of a bird. Later, she was finally deemed the goddess of wisdom.

Some of the heros she helped were Perseus, Jason, Cadmus, Odysseus and Heracles.

Hope you enjoyed these fun facts. More info to come!

Athena's Life

Athena's Life

At one point, Zeus was married to Metis, a daughter of the Ocean, and well known for her wisdom.  Metis became pregnant, and Zeus was warned that the son of Metis would conquer the throne over him, just like he did to his father. Not being the smartest guy, he swallowed Metis. He later got a terrible headache. He called upon Hephaestus for help. Also not being the brightest bulb on the tree, he grabbed an axe and fired away, right at Zeus' head. Suddenly, Athena popped out of his head, fully armed. Pretty gross, but it's what the legend says.

Athena was the Patron goddess of Athens. Obviously. But how did it come to be? Well, Athena and Poseidon were fighting over Athens, which was probably not called Athens then, and they decided to have a contest for who would be the patron goddess of Athens. Athena brought up a large olive tree, and the people were overjoyed. Poseidon, not being one to accept defeat easily, spouted water up from the middle of the city. But, being the god of the sea, the water was salty, and the people found Athena's gift more useful. I thought this story was awesome. It shows that Athena was not only known for wisdom, but her ability of olive-ness.

Everyone should know that Athena aided Perseus slay the gorgon Medusa. But the question is, why? Well, it's actually a pretty simple answer, actually. She just wanted a gorgon's head on her shield. She takes pride in the many heads on her shields, and wanted Medusa's really badly.

These are some of the main events in Athena's life, and some of the reasons she was well known.

Beginning of Project- Gathering Facts

  • Athena was known as Minerva to the Romans
  • Goddess of crafts and the domestic arts and also those of war.
  • Zeus was once married to Metis, a daughter of Ocean who was renowned for her wisdom. When Metis became pregnant, Zeus was warned by Earth that a son born to Metis would overthrow him, just as he had usurped his own father's throne. So Zeus swallowed Metis. In time he was overcome with a splitting headache and summoned help from the craftsman god Hephaestus (or, some say, the Titan Prometheus). Hephaestus cleaved Zeus's forehead with an ax, and Athena sprang forth fully armed.
  • Patron goddess of Athens.
  • Her symbol was the owl.
  • Originally the great goddess in the form of a bird. Now known as the goddess of wisdom.
  • Athena aided the heroes Perseus, Jason, Cadmus, Odysseus and Heracles in their quests.
  • Both Athena and Poseidon wanted to be patron deity of Athens. To prove her worthiness for the honor, Athena caused an olive tree to spring up on the citadel of Athens, the Acropolis. Poseidon sought to outdo her by striking the ground with his trident and causing a spring of water to gush forth. But as he was god of the sea, the water was salty. Athena's gift to the Athenians was considered to be more useful, so she became the city's patron deity.
  • Athena aided Perseus in defeating Medusa because she wanted a gorgon's head on her shield.
